Fongchi Lai holds an MFA in Film from the San Francisco Art Institute.
His short films Ephemera and Floating Duckweed won Best Experimental Film at the 15th and 16th Golden Harvest Awards, and were invited to screen at the ARCO Experimental Film Showcase in Madrid.
His documentary The Beautician was nominated for Best Documentary at the 30th Golden Horse Awards, and selected by the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival and the Melbourne International Film Festival.
His follow-up documentary The Crewwas nominated for Best Documentary at the 37th Golden Horse Awards.
His biographical documentary Lu He-Ruowas nominated for Best Documentary at the 89th Golden Bell Awards, and awarded Best Director at the Golden Deer Awards.
In 2010, he directed Nature City, a 720° 4D full-dome immersive film showcased at the Taiwan Pavilion of the Shanghai World Expo.
From 1988 to 2024, Lai has directed over a hundred television commercials across the Greater China region, and is recognized as a prominent commercial director.
He has worked with and gained wide acclaim from numerous top-tier celebrities including: Jacky Cheung, Nicholas Tse, Li Bingbing, Shu Qi, Zhou Xun, Jing Tian, Zhao Wei, Lin Chi-ling, Dee Hsu (Little S), Jeannie Hsieh, Li Jing, Cyndi Wang, Chen Tao, Yang Lan, Li Chen, Ariel Lin, Rainie Yang, and Harlem Yu. In 2020, he founded "Te Fong Films Co., Ltd."
